Program Overview for MA in Greek & Roman Studies in Canada:

Explore the ancient world through UVic's Greek and Roman studies. We are committed to the investigation and protection of the culture of the Greek and Roman world. In our dynamic master's and doctoral programs, you will gain a foundation in history, literature, and archeology. Armed with this knowledge, you will be ready to face the unique challenges of the modern world.

Explore classical language, history, literature, and archeology. You will do directed reading and work with your supervisor for the first year. In the second year, you will prepare an essay focused on a specific area or topic of interest to you. We encourage you to explore underrepresented areas in past scholarships. 

All applicants must demonstrate a complete understanding of the ancient Greek and Roman world.

The eligibility for MA in Greek & Roman Studies in Canada for both domestic and international student is:

The basic admission requirement is a four-year bachelor's degree with at least a B+ (6.0) GPA in one of the several areas of ancient Greek and Roman Studies. All MA applicants must be able to demonstrate a well-rounded, comprehensive knowledge of the ancient Greek and Roman worlds. MA applicants should ideally have balanced strength in Greek and Latin, or substantial experience in one language and at least basic competence in the other. Students who lack sufficient language preparation will be required, in addition to the normal requirements of the MA program, to complete language study to a minimum third-year undergraduate level of one language and second-year level of the other, with a minimum grade of B+ in both.

Competency in reading French, German or Italian upon admission is advantageous; students will be required to demonstrate reading knowledge of one of these modern languages before completion of the MA degree. In addition to the documentation required by the Faculty of Graduate Studies (see Faculty Admissions), the Department of Greek and Roman Studies also requires a statement of intent from each prospective MA student outlining the student’s research interests.

Deadlines

The application deadline for consideration for financial aid, particularly for the University of Victoria Fellowships is February 1. Applications received after February 1 will be considered, but applicants will not usually be eligible for funding. The application deadline is June 1 for September admission.

  • Up to $17,500 per year (masters)

Eligibility

  • The minimum requirement for funding consideration is an A- average on the last two years of coursework.
  • Domestic and international students are considered equally for funding
  • Full-time registration (3.0 units) for UVic Fellowship holders and at least part-time registration (1.5 units) for UVic Graduate Award holders
  • Full-time registration for students registered with the Centre for Accessible Learning (CAL) is 1.5 units

Every year we employ many graduate students to assist with teaching, research, and lab instruction.

  • Their academic units hire teaching assistants (TAs) to assist with teaching and grading courses. These are unionized, hourly positions.
  • Faculty members hire research assistants (RAs) to help with their research. These roles are sometimes called scientific assistants or laboratory instructors. RA salaries come from faculty members’ research grants. Because of this, RA hours, salary, and other details are worked out between you and the faculty member.

Work-study

The work-study program offers part-time jobs on campus that fit your course schedule.

To be eligible, you must:

  • Be a full-time student
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN)

Co-operative Education Program (co-op)
