Program Overview for MA in French Literature, Language & Culture in Canada:

Focus on the study of French literature, language and culture. You can also choose to study for a master's degree in French, specializing in cultural, social, and political thought (CSPT) or other interdisciplinary courses. With the help of a consultant, you will choose a field of expertise for your research project or thesis. Your degree will take you to different career choices in Canada and abroad, providing you with a competitive advantage in Canada and the French-speaking world.

In our master's degree, you will study French literature, language, and culture. You can also focus on cultural, social, and political thought (CSPT). The college's majors include French, Quebec, Canada, African and Caribbean literature, culture and theory, film, theater, indigenous literature, creative writing, research-creation, queer theory, digital humanities, and applied and theoretical linguistics. The eligibility for MA in French Literature, Language & Culture in Canada for both domestic and international student is:

Completion of a 4-year bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) from an institution recognized by Uvic. The equivalent of a minimum “B” average over the last two years of your degree.

Admission to either the thesis or the project-based program requires a BA degree in French, or equivalent, with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 6.5 in third- and fourth-year French courses, or equivalent. This qualification should consist of a minimum of 15 units of senior undergraduate coursework in French.

Students with background deficiencies may be required to make up courses before being admitted to the MA program.

Deadlines

The deadline for applications is May 31. However, to be considered for a UVic Fellowship, applications must normally be received by February 1.

Graduate students registered in full-time programs are automatically considered for a fellowship. This is based on a qualifying GPA.

  • Up to $17,500 per year (masters)
  • Up to $20,000 per year (Ph.D.)

UVic Graduate Awards

  • Up to $10,000 per year (masters and PhD)

Eligibility

  • The minimum requirement for funding consideration is an A- average on the last two years of coursework
  • Domestic and international students are considered equally for funding
  • Full-time registration (3.0 units) for UVic Fellowship holders and at least part-time registration (1.5 units) for UVic Graduate Award holders
  • Full-time registration for students registered with the Centre for Accessible Learning (CAL) is 1.5 units

Every year we employ many graduate students to assist with teaching, research, and lab instruction.

  • Their academic units hire teaching assistants (TAs) to assist with teaching and grading courses. These are unionized, hourly positions.
  • Faculty members hire research assistants (RAs) to help with their research. These roles are sometimes called scientific assistants or laboratory instructors. RA salaries come from faculty members’ research grants. Because of this, RA hours, salary, and other details are worked out between you and the faculty member.

Work-study

The work-study program offers part-time jobs on campus that fit your course schedule.

To be eligible, you must:

  • Be a full-time student
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN)
