Program Overview for MEd in Coaching Studies in Canada:

Exercise, sports, and sports change lives and enrich communities. Our curriculum follows a research-based education approach, emphasizing the role of students in learning. You will gain knowledge and confidence and become a leader in sports science and health education. Your degree will give you a competitive advantage in teaching, management, or sports medicine.

This degree based on projects will teach you the science behind coaching. You will learn about current technologies and problems to make them more effective. This program begins with Chourework with an intensive summer base. From there, we continue working online and on projects. You can get experience in Hanson through the conditions of two cooperative jobs.

The eligibility for MEd in Coaching Studies in Canada for both domestic and international student is:

Potential applicants may contact the Graduate Adviser of the School of Exercise Science, Physical and Health Education for application information. However, to pursue formal admission, the student must complete the Graduate Admissions and Records Office application.

In addition to the requirements required by the Faculty of Graduate Studies, admission to the master’s graduate programs in the School of Exercise Science, Physical and Health Education requires an undergraduate degree in Exercise Science, Physical and Health Education, or related field. Applicants to all MA and MSc programs should include a Letter of Intent, which states their specific area of research interest, include a brief statement of academic and career goals, and identify a faculty member as a possible supervisor. MEd Coaching Studies applicants should include a resumé of their coaching experience and certification levels. Copies of certificates are required as proof of certification.

Deadlines

Summer Session (May-August) is the only entry point for this program. The recommended application deadline for domestic applications is March 15th to enter the May entry point of the same year. For international applicants, the recommended deadline is October 15th for entry in the summer of the following year.

Primarily for VISA applicants and permanent residents whose most recent transcripts are coming from overseas institutions:

  • Apply by December 15th for the September entry point
  • Apply by April 15th for the January entry point
  • Apply by October 15th for the May entry point

Note to all applicants: To be eligible for consideration to be nominated by the School of Exercise Science, Physical and Health Education for a UVic Graduate Award, applicants must have accepted an offer to commence their program by July 31st.

Graduate students registered in full-time programs are automatically considered for a fellowship. This is based on a qualifying GPA.

Eligibility

  • The minimum requirement for funding consideration is an A- average on the last two years of coursework
  • Domestic and international students are considered equally for funding
  • Full-time registration (3.0 units) for UVic Fellowship holders and at least part-time registration (1.5 units) for UVic Graduate Award holders
  • Full-time registration for students registered with the Centre for Accessible Learning (CAL) is 1.5 units

Every year we employ many graduate students to assist with teaching, research, and lab instruction.

  • Their academic units hire teaching assistants (TAs) to assist with teaching and grading courses. These are unionized, hourly positions.
  • Faculty members hire research assistants (RAs) to help with their research. These roles are sometimes called scientific assistants or laboratory instructors. RA salaries come from faculty members’ research grants. Because of this, RA hours, salary, and other details are worked out between you and the faculty member.

Work-study

The work-study program offers part-time jobs on campus that fit your course schedule.

To be eligible, you must:

  • Be a full-time student
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN)
