Study topics such as global climate change, earthquakes, groundwater pollution, or marine pollution through Master of Science (MSc) or Ph.D. options. You can study comprehensive multidisciplinary courses in geology, geophysics, oceanography, and atmospheric and climatic sciences.
In the field of Earth and Ocean Sciences, you will receive a unique education that will take you on field trips, field schools, and sea cruises. We believe that to study this planet, you must experience it for yourself. You will also have the opportunity to study with professors from the Canadian Center for Climate Modeling and Analysis and the nearby Institute of Marine Sciences and Geological Survey of Canada (Pacific).
During your Ph.D., you will work in a diverse and innovative research community. You will prepare a graduation thesis to show your hard work and research focus. Your research will focus on the planetary system while treating the earth as a whole. Courses and candidacy exams will supplement this research. Your essay will highlight your achievements and enhance our understanding of the world around us.
Areas of focus
Applicants for a graduate degree in Earth and Ocean Sciences should have a Major or Honours degree in a closely related science. A student who does not have such a degree can be admitted to the program but must complete additional makeup courses. In doing so, the student must obtain a grade of at least B (5.0) in each makeup course and an average of B+ (6.0) in the makeup courses. Mature students are advised to consult the Faculty regulations regarding conditional admittance.
Inquiries concerning the graduate program may be addressed to the SEOS Graduate Secretary, School of Earth and Ocean Sciences. Application forms for admission, which include the need for financial assistance, can be obtained directly from the Graduate Admissions and Records website. A statement of research interests must be submitted with the completed application.
Applicants whose native language is not English must write the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and submit the scores to the Graduate Admissions and Records Office (see English Language Proficiency) together with their application forms. Even with passing TOEFL scores, students may be required to take English language courses in addition to other course work.
Applications to graduate studies are considered year-round.
