The eligibility for Doctor of Philosophy in Chemistry (PhD) in Canada for both domestic and international student is:

Completion of an acceptable master’s degree (or equivalent) from an institution recognized by UVic Any requirements specific to your program of study or You may be considered if you have the equivalent of an A- average in the last two years of a bachelor’s degree.

The Chemistry department offers programs of study leading to the degrees of MSc and Ph.D. Complete admission requirements are supplied as part of the application package. Students accepted for admission are provided with a detailed outline of current policy and procedures for graduate study in the department. Based on experience and performance, students may be permitted to enter either the MSc or Ph.D. degree. Applications are accepted from students who have completed a baccalaureate degree in chemistry or its equivalent. In addition, students completing a baccalaureate degree at a non-Canadian institution may be required to submit Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General test scores; see the Department’s website for details.

Some international applicants may be exempt from the English language test requirement. International applicants should review the international applicant (language proficiency) area of the graduate admissions website. Students admitted to Chemistry may still be required to complete additional English language courses and their other coursework.

1. Students entering a first-class undergraduate degree or a previous MSc degree from a recognized institution may be admitted directly to Ph.D. studies.
2. Graduate students in a Master’s program may transfer to a Ph.D. program with the support of their supervisory committee.
3. Applicants who already hold a Ph.D. in chemistry must have their application reviewed by the Department of Chemistry and the Faculty of Graduate Studies before being considered for the Ph.D. program. Normally applicants already holding a Ph.D. in chemistry will not be considered for the Ph.D. program.

Students are admitted to the Ph.D. program in September, January, and May.

All graduate students must have a faculty member who serves as their academic supervisor. When you apply:

Graduate students registered in full-time programs are automatically considered for a fellowship. This is based on a qualifying GPA.

Eligibility

• The minimum requirement for funding consideration is an A- average on the last two years of coursework
• Domestic and international students are considered equally for funding
• Full-time registration (3.0 units) for UVic Fellowship holders and at least part-time registration (1.5 units) for UVic Graduate Award holders
• Full-time registration for students registered with the Centre for Accessible Learning (CAL) is 1.5 units

Every year we employ many graduate students to assist with teaching, research, and lab instruction.

• Their academic units hire teaching assistants (TAs) to assist with teaching and grading courses. These are unionized, hourly positions.
• Faculty members hire research assistants (RAs) to help with their research. These roles are sometimes called scientific assistants or laboratory instructors. RA salaries come from faculty members’ research grants. Because of this, RA hours, salary, and other details are worked out between you and the faculty member.

Work-study

The work-study program offers part-time jobs on campus that fit your course schedule.

To be eligible, you must:
