Admission Criteria

Donor-sponsored awards are open to graduate students in various disciplines who meet the award eligibility requirements. Calls for applications for these awards are posted under "Grad News" in the top right section of this website. The annual competition for these awards normally opens in the Fall term, with an application deadline of January 15.

Note that students in the following programs are not eligible:  MAC, MActSc, MAEP, MEd (International cohort), MEng, MMB, MoM, MSW for Working Professionals.

Scholarships open to all disciplines (except where indicated): 

Dr. Lois K. Smedick Graduate Awards: Awarded to a graduate student with a minimum average of 80% in any discipline. Must be Canadian/Permanent Resident and show financial need. 

Value: $1,000.       

Charles Clark Graduate Awards: Awarded to a graduate student with a minimum average of 80% in any discipline. Must be Canadian/Permanent Resident and show financial need.  

Value: $1,000.

Dr. Ross H. Paul Scholarships: Awarded to a graduate student with a minimum average of 80% in any discipline. Must be Canadian/Permanent Resident and show financial need.

Value: $1,000.

James Molnar Graduate Scholarships: Awarded to a graduate student with a minimum average of 80% in any discipline. Must be Canadian/Permanent Resident and show financial need. 

Value: $500.

A. R. and E.G. Ferriss Awards: Awarded to a graduate student with a minimum average of 80% in any discipline. Must be Canadian/Permanent Resident and show financial need. 

Value: $1,000.

General Graduate Endowment Awards: Awarded to a graduate student with a minimum average of 80% in any discipline. Must be Canadian/Permanent Resident and show financial need. 

Value: $1,000.       

Ian and Terry Scholarship: Awarded to a mature student, with family or other responsibilities, enrolled in any graduate program in the natural or applied sciences on the basis of academic merit. Must be a Canadian/Permanent Resident.  

Value $1,000.

Canadian Federation of University Women (Windsor Club) Award: Awarded annually to a female graduate student whose research area concerns issues related to women. 

Must be Canadian/Permanent Resident and show financial need. 

Value: $2,500. 

Campus Dental Graduate Award: Two awards available annually to one Master's student and one PhD student in any discipline. Must have a minimum average of 80%.

Value: $1,250. 

Cancer Research:

Windsor Prostate Cancer Scholarships: Awarded to Master’s or PhD students engaged in research related to prostate cancer in any discipline.  Must be Canadian/Permanent Resident and show financial need.

Value:  $1,000.

Casino Windsor Cares/Gail Rosenblum Memorial Breast Cancer Research Scholarships: Awarded to Master’s or PhD students engaged in study in breast cancer research in any discipline. Must be Canadian/Permanent Resident and show financial need.

Value:  $5,000.

Gloria & Carl Morgan Graduate Scholarship in Breast Cancer Research: Awarded to Master’s or PhD students engaged in study in breast cancer research in any discipline. Must be Canadian/Permanent Resident and show financial need.

Value: $1,000.

Elena Loaring Memorial Fund for Breast Cancer Research: Awarded to Master’s or PhD students engaged in medical-related breast cancer research in Nursing or Science. Must be Canadian/Permanent Resident and show financial need.

Value:  $2,000.

Chemistry and Biochemistry:

William A. Redmond Memorial Bursary: Awarded on the basis of academic achievement to a student beginning a graduate program in Chemistry or Biochemistry at the University of Windsor. Established (1972) in memory of William A. Redmond, who obtained his doctorate in chemistry at the University of Windsor in 1964. 

Value: $1,000.

Dennis Tuck Memorial Scholarship in Chemistry: Awarded to a graduate student in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry with an average of at least 90%, to honour the outstanding career of Dr. Dennis Tuck, a distinguished and respected researcher, professor and former department head in Chemistry. Must be Canadian citizen/Permanent Resident and show financial need.

Value: $1,000.

Kevin Couvillon Memorial Scholarship: Awarded to a graduate student in Chemistry and Biochemistry who is engaged in cancer research.  Must have a GPA of at least 80%.  Preference will be given to students working on natural or non-invasive treatments. Must be Canadian/Permanent Resident and show financial need.

Value:  $1,000.

Communication, Media and Film:

Meng-Rooney Memorial Bursary: Awarded annually on the basis of scholarship and financial need to a graduate student in Communication Studies.  Established in 1989 in honour of a Master's student from the People's Republic of China. 

Value $500.

Engineering:

Frederick G. and Doris B. Bristow Award: For M.A.Sc or Ph.D. students registered in any Engineering graduate program.

•  Must be Canadian/Permanent Resident with an average of at least 77%, and show financial need.
•  Recipients must have received their education from a recognized Canadian high school and their undergraduate degree from a Canadian university.  Preference given to a student of English descent (at least one parent born in England).   Nominees for this award must provide documentation showing that they meet the previous education criteria. 
• Value: $2,500.

Benito P. and Teofila S. Calayag Award: For M.A.Sc or Ph.D. students registered in the Mechanical Engineering graduate program. If no suitable candidate in Mechanical Engineering, the award may be given to a student from another Engineering graduate program. Must be Canadian/Permanent Resident with an average of at least 77%, and show financial need. Recipients must have received their degree from a recognized Canadian high school and their undergraduate degree from a Canadian university. Preference given to a student of Filipino descent (at least one parent born in the Philippines). 

Value: $2,500.

MEDA Ltd. Mel Lawn Memorial Scholarship: Awarded to a student in any graduate program in Mechanical, Automotive and Materials Engineering.  Preference will be given to students who have a record of community service in the past two years.  Must be Canadian/Permanent Resident with an average of at least 73%, and show financial need. 

Value: $2,000.

Frederick Atkins Graduate Awards: Awarded to graduate students in a program in Electrical Engineering on the basis of excellent performance in research and course work. Applicants must be Canadian/Permanent Resident. 

Value: $2,000. 

F. Wayne and Purita C. Bristow Award: For M.A.Sc or Ph.D. students registered in the Electrical Engineering graduate program. If no suitable candidate in Electrical Engineering, the award may be given to a student from another Engineering graduate program. Must be Canadian/Permanent Resident with an average of at least 77%, and show financial need. Recipients must have received their education from a recognized Canadian high school and their undergraduate degree from a Canadian university. Preference given to a student of Canadian descent (at least one parent born in Canada). 

Value: $2,500.

Notes

English Language, Literature and Creative Writing:

Jennifer Lynch Memorial Scholarship in Creative Writing: Awarded to a graduate student in the English and Creative Writing program based on academic merit. Must be Canadian/Permanent Resident and show financial need. 

Value: $1,000.

The Phillip Lang Memorial Scholarship: Awarded to a graduate student in the department of English (Canadian Literature or Creative Writing), on the basis of academic standing.  Must be Canadian/Permanent Resident and show financial need. 

Value:  $1,000.

Enviromental:

University of Windsor Graduate Environmental Scholarships: Awarded on the basis of merit to a student in a graduate environmental program at the University of Windsor. Students should be able to demonstrate a commitment to and potential for making significant contributions in environmental science or environmental engineering. Areas of study: Biological Sciences, Chemistry & Biochemistry, Civil & Environmental Engineering, Earth Sciences, Environmental Science. Must be Canadian/Permanent Resident and show financial need. 

Value: $1,000.

Health Science:

Verdecchia Family Graduate Scholarships in Health Sciences: Awarded to Master’s or PhD students engaged in study in the health sciences. Must be Canadian/Permanent Resident and show financial need. 

Value: $1,000.

Brian & Wilma Hannon Graduate Scholarship: Awarded to Master’s or PhD students engaged in study in the health sciences. Must be Canadian/Permanent Resident and show financial need. 

Value: $1,000.

Political Sciences:

Walter L. White Memorial Scholarship: Awarded annually on the basis of scholarship and financial need to a graduate student in political science. Established in 1975 by friends and admirers of Walter L. White, first Head of the Department of Political Science and first Dean of Social Science. 

Value: up to $1,000.

Stephen & Vicki Adams Scholarship in Graduate Studies (Political Science): Awarded annually to a Master’s student in the Department of Political Science based on academic achievement.  Must be Canadian/Permanent Resident and show financial need.

Value: $1,000.

Dr. Sourinda Dutta Memorial Scholarships for Graduate Studies in Political Science: Awarded to international Master’s students in the Department of Political Science, based on academic achievement and financial need.

Value: $500.

Science:

Peter & Beatrice Soteros Scholarship: Awarded to a Master’s or PhD student engaged in study in the Faculty of Science. Must be Canadian/Permanent Resident and show financial need. 

Value: $500.

Sociology:

Dr. Robert Whitehurst Graduate Scholarship: Awarded to a graduate student in the MA program in Sociology on the basis of academic merit (minimum cumulative average of 80%) and evidence of extracurricular activity.  Must be Canadian/Permanent Resident and show financial need. 

Value: $500.

Admission Criteria

To be considered for an entrance scholarship, applicants must submit the full application package for admission into the academic program by the individual program's application deadline or the entrance scholarship deadline, whichever is earlier.

At the time of admission both Canadian and International full-time applicants to research-based programs with an admission average of at least 80% (or equivalent) will be considered for entrance scholarships upon the recommendation of their program:

Master's

• in a thesis or major paper stream: $7,500 for one year (non-renewable)
• in a non-thesis or non-major paper stream: $3,750 for one year (non-renewable)
• students in the following programs are not eligible for funding:  MAC, MActSc, MAEP, MEd (International cohort), MEng, MMB, MM, MSW for Working Professionals

Doctoral

• $7,500 per year for up to 4 years

International students may also be eligible for scholarship and bursary support through programs based in or administered through their home country. We recommend that international students investigate potential sources of support prior to making an application to graduate school, noting that, in Ontario, tuition costs for international students are higher than those for Canadians and Canadian permanent residents (landed immigrants).
