VIU's graduate program is enriched with school administration, educational psychology, and educational research teachings that provide students the foundational building blocks to become innovative leaders in the school system.
This program prepares students with the practical, ethical, and social tools to solve problems, manage conflict and encourage growth. Graduates of the program find employment in leadership positions in the education sector, both domestically and abroad.
The M.Ed. in Educational Leadership provides a program of preparation for aspiring and practicing school leaders. Grounded in the rich educational leadership literature supplemented by extensive faculty expertise and experience.
The course is offered in three different formats:
Full-time Option:
This queue-based model is designed for students who wish to study full-time on the VIU campus. All formal courses are completed in two semesters. The field survey and the project's main components were completed in two semesters of the second year. Students can complete these parts through online support and can complete them up to one semester in advance.
Weekend / Summer Option:
This queue-based part-time model is designed for students who can travel to the VIU campus (Nanaimo or Kauikan). In each semester of the two-year fall and spring semesters, classes will be held six times on Friday nights and Saturdays. Also, the courses are held in July between the first and second year.
Distance Option
This part-time group model is designed for people who live far from VIU. Preference will be given to applicants residing outside of the central region. During the school year, the courses are online. The first year begins when the students meet on the VIU campus for eight days. Between the first and second years, the cohort will study at VIU in July.
The Master of Educational Leadership provides a preparation plan for aspiring and practical school leaders. The program provides a balance of research, policy, and practice based on a wealth of educational leadership literature, supplemented by extensive experience and teacher expertise. Graduates of our program will demonstrate successful leaders' knowledge, skills, and attitudes as outlined in the BC Director and Vice-Principal Leadership Standards. These skills are at the core of the school's formal and informal leadership.

M.Ed. National Graduates The program will prepare for leadership positions in domestic and foreign education, including principals and assistant principals. Based on survey data from the British Columbia Association of Principals and Assistant Principals and the age demographics of British Columbia educators, the Department of Education predicts there will be more than 1,000 vacant administrative positions in the next five years. Employers need a master's degree to fill administrative positions. Recently, some school districts have revealed their preference for graduate degrees from higher education institutions in British Columbia.
