The Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree program in History allows students to take a journey through time and space in a professional research field, studying a wide range of topics such as politics, war, genocide, and social movements, as well as limited European films. And local hockey in Canadian culture.
Whether you choose a history major or a history major as part of your BA course, you will have a historical background to serve you in your chosen field. History students are good at critical thinking, problem-solving, and data interpretation, all of these are important and valuable skills in every career and graduate program.
History graduates have done well in various careers in education, law, heritage, journalism, marketing, public service, and the film and video game industries.
Historical research is an important part of creating an innovative, humane, prosperous, and free civil society in which individuals can participate as active and informed citizens. Throughout the learning process, history students read elementary and high school textbooks to impart knowledge and critical understanding of their research fields and expose them to different methodologies, methods, and historical perspectives. Students also explore different interpretations of historical backgrounds and texts to improve their critical thinking skills further.
Historical research is a simple dialogue with the past and allows students to better interact with the present and prepare for the future.
The Department of History offers two undergraduate courses: 100/200 (basic/introductory) and 300/400 (advanced project research). Courses numbered 300 and 400 can be used to earn elementary or advanced credits. Students usually have to complete 100/200 level courses before taking advanced courses in the same field.

The honors history course allows students to enrich their understanding and practice of history further. This is accomplished primarily through participation in honors courses for two majors. The first, History 490 (Historiography with Honors and Research Methods), allows students to study in-depth the diversity of theoretical methods and research strategies used by historians in the past and present.
This course also allows students to read many historical works, which is intended to provide them with valuable prior knowledge and prepare for the second professional course: History 491 (honors thesis). History 491 Work under the guidance of an agreed supervising teacher, providing students with the opportunity to undertake a certain degree of research and writing, which will meet the master's level standard.
Therefore, graduates with honors in history will have a skillset and a wealth of knowledge when they exit VIU, preparing them for graduate study and/or professional situations in the field.
