Program Overview for Master of Music (MMus) in Canada:

The Master of Music (MMus) degree is available in three fields: MMus in Composition; MMus in Literature and Performance; and MMus in Music Education.

These are the international student eligibility for the Master of Music (MMus) in Canada

MMus in Composition:

  • A Bachelor of Music with specialization in Composition or its equivalent, including three years of composition study
  • Three to four recent original scores in a variety of media
  • Instrumental recordings (not MIDI) of the original compositions where possible. On the application, please provide URL for site where your recording can be accessed, or mail a CD to the Graduate Program Assistant
  • A recent assignment or essay that demonstrates skills in analysis
  • A one-page statement of background, goals, and research/creative interests in composition
  • Two confidential letters of reference

MMus in Music Education:

  • A Bachelor of Music with specialization in Music Education or its equivalent
  • One recent essay (2,500-3,000 words) that demonstrate abilities in research and writing
  • A recent music teaching video in a setting of your choosing (15-20 minutes)
  • A  statement of interest video (no more than 5 minutes) where you will: 1) Tell us of your experiences as a musician and educator; 2) Speak of the current challenges you see in music education; 3) Tell us why you are interested in our program and the impact it will have in your professional growth.
  • A current resume or curriculum vitae
  • Two confidential letters of reference

MMus in Literature and Performance:

  • A Bachelor of Music with specialization in Performance or its equivalent, including related literature and pedagogy courses
  • An indication of exceptional ability and potential through the audition comparable to an 'A' standard of the final undergraduate year (see MMus Audition Requirements by Instrument)
  • A one-page statement of background, goals, and research/creative interests in performance
  • A current resume or curriculum vitae
  • Two confidential letters of reference

These are the domestic student eligibility for the Master of Music (MMus)

These are the test eligibilities for the Master of Music (MMus) to qualify.

The English Language Proficiency (ELP) requirements for Master of Music (MMus) in Canada: are:

  • TOEFL(ibt): 86
  • IELTS(academic): 6
N.B: ELP is not mandatory for all international students. You could apply without ELP if your previous degree's medium of instruction were in English. Students of Ghana, Nigeria, Liberia, for example, are not required to take the ELP test.

The Master of Music (MMus) degree is available in three fields: MMus in Composition; MMus in Literature and Performance; and MMus in Music Education. Applications received after the deadline are contingent on space availability and funding.Western recognizes that students who choose to undertake full-time graduate studies are choosing to delay their entry into the full-time workforce.
