Do you want to change the world? Our plan develops your ability to investigate and understand the root causes of our time's most relevant environmental and social justice issues. Through a combination of critical theories, methods, and personalized community placement, our Social Justice and Community Engagement (SJCE) Master of Arts (MA) program engages students in activities that actively promote social and environmental justice principles in our community and around the world. Through course work, personalized community placement, and Major Research Projects (MRP), you will gain insights to help you understand how to change the world. You will have the skills to promote the development of communities that undertake social and environmental justice work. Our courses lay a solid foundation for SJCE theories and methods and cultivate your research and writing skills through various projects.

Your community location is an opportunity for you to gain practical experience applying theoretical ideas about social and environmental justice in a community setting. The location is determined based on your interests and needs, including any accommodations while ensuring that community organizations benefit from the location.

Full-time courses are usually completed within one year. We also offer part-time courses.

Students pursuing the Master of Arts (MA) in Social Justice and Community Engagement can complete their degree through full-time or part-time study. Full-time students generally complete the course in one year. Part-time students typically take two to three years to complete the course. All students complete their degrees in one of the three ways described below:

The eligibility for Social Justice and Community Engagement (MA) in Canada for both domestic and international student is:

• A four-year (honors) undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in humanities, social science, natural science, or related interdisciplinary program, and a background in social and environmental justice concepts.
• A minimum B average in your last two years of undergraduate study, or equivalent.
• Applications are reviewed by the graduate program admissions committee, which considers prior post-secondary grades, a statement of intent including your social/environmental justice background and interests, a writing sample, and letters of reference.

Application checklist:

After you have submitted your OUAC application, paid the non-refundable application fee, and Laurier has received your application, you'll receive an email from gradadmissions@wlu.ca advising you to upload the additional required documentation to Laurier’s Online Registration & Information System (LORIS).

An application for admission to the MA program in Social Justice and Community Engagement must include:

• The Application Summary is generated after you complete your OUAC application (log back into OUAC to retrieve it).
• Transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate work.
• A completed statement of intent.
• A resume of your academic and work experience. Include a history of your publication and scholarly paper activity, and any other information you feel will interest the admissions committee.
• A sample of your scholarly writing (10-20 pages in length). This may be a paper written for a senior undergraduate course.
• Completed reference forms. Two academic references are required. Note: Reference forms are electronically submitted to Laurier by the referee and do not need to be uploaded.

Proficiency in written and spoken English is essential to graduate studies at Laurier. Applicants whose language of instruction during their previous postsecondary education was not in English must submit evidence of proficiency in English. If applicable, results from accepted testing services must be uploaded to LORIS.

The tuition fees are based on the term(Not per academic year). Wilfred offers generous funding to its graduate students. Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA), Research Assistant, Contract Teaching Faculty (CTF), Internal scholarships and awards, and external funding are also available to support students. Some other funding includes:

• Winners of major external awards (OGS, QEII, and Tri-Council) may be eligible for top-up funding, including the Dean's Graduate Scholarship (total value exceeds $10,000).
• Eligible domestic students admitted studying on a full-time basis receive a minimum of $22,000 a year. This support may consist of teaching assistantships, internal/external scholarships, and/or faculty-funded studentships or research assistantships.
