Program Overview for Religion, Culture and Global Justice (MA) in Canada:

Our world faces urgent global justice problems related to armed conflict, population migration, economic inequality, and environmental change. To understand and solve these problems, no thematic point of view is sufficient. The Master of Arts (MA) in Religion, Culture, and Global Justice is an exciting new course that provides you with an important interdisciplinary space to reflect on how religion intersects with these global issues. 

In addition to political issues, the program promotes critical analysis of cultural and religious processes and their political impact in a globalized world.

Our Faculty come from Laurier's Department of Religion and Culture and Global Studies. They are experts in the social sciences and humanities and research the world. We bring diversified knowledge and professional knowledge to the classroom and student supervision to promote the spirit of transformative learning and free inquiry.

The interdisciplinary nature of the Master of Arts (MA) in Religion, Culture, and Global Justice program prepares you to move into professional arenas within and outside of academia, such as:

  • International relations and public policy;
  • Interreligious dialogue and peace-building;
  • Refugee and migrant resettlement;
  • Institutional human rights and diversity policy;
  • Journalism and communications; and
  • Programming on multiculturalism and community development.

We encourage you to interrogate conventions and develop new modes of ethical engagement. We seek to cultivate the critical skills and the knowledge that you need to succeed both within and beyond the university.

The MA in Religion, Culture, and Global Justice would be a perfect fit for candidates who contemplate pursuing further graduate studies (e.g., doctoral studies or professional programs in public policy or social work) or seeking employment in the NGO sector (e.g., nonprofit advocacy and organization: community development, refugee settlement, arts, and culture) or education or journalism sectors.

The eligibility for Religion, Culture and Global Justice (MA) in Canada for both domestic and international student is:

  • A four-year (honors) undergraduate degree (or equivalent).
  • A minimum B average in your fourth year of undergraduate study.
  • Applications are reviewed by the graduate program committee, which considers all prior university grades, statements of research interests, a writing sample, and letters of reference.
  • Review any additional requirements/considerations applicable as an international applicant.

Application Checklist:

After you have submitted your OUAC application, paid the non-refundable application fee, and Laurier has received your application, you'll receive an email from gradadmissions@wlu.ca advising you to upload the additional required documentation to Laurier’s Online Registration & Information System (LORIS).

An application for admission to our MA program in Religion, Culture, and Global Justice must include:

  • The Application Summary is generated after you complete your OUAC application (log back into OUAC to retrieve it).
  • Transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate work.
  • A completed statement of intent.
  • A resume of your academic and work experience. Where applicable, include a history of your research experience and publication or conference activity, as well as any other information you feel will interest the admissions committee.
  • A sample of your scholarly writing (10-20 pages in length). This may be a paper written for a senior undergraduate course.
  • Completed reference forms. Two academic references are required. Note: Reference forms are electronically submitted to Laurier by the referee and do not need to be uploaded.

Proficiency in written and spoken English is essential to graduate studies at Laurier. Applicants whose language of instruction during their previous postsecondary education was not in English must submit evidence of proficiency in English. If applicable, results from accepted testing services must be uploaded to LORIS.

The tuition fees are based on the term(Not per academic year). Wilfred offers generous funding to its graduate students. Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA), Research Assistant, Contract Teaching Faculty (CTF), Internal scholarships and awards, and external funding are also available to support students. Some other funding includes:

  • Eligible domestic students admitted to study on a full-time basis are entitled to one year of funding totaling, on average, $14,500. This support may be made up of teaching assistantships, internal/external scholarships, and/or faculty-funded studentships or research assistantships.
  • Winners of major external awards (OGS, QEII, and Tri-Council) may be eligible for top-up funding which includes the Dean's Graduate Scholarship (total value exceeds $10,000)
