Program Overview for Public Safety (MPS) in Canada:

The Master of Public Safety is a fully online part-time professional course for people who are employed or seeking a job in the field of public safety. It was developed deliberately and focused on the four pillars of public safety: national security, border strategy, anti-crime, and emergency management. The program specializes in public safety leadership and management and aims to cultivate the ability to:

  • Effectively improve and critically assess the performance of their organizations;
  • Assume policymaking and research responsibilities;
  • Be motivated to set and reach strategic organizational goals;
  • Be inspirational, ethical, and innovative leaders.

The program offers rigorous, challenging, and comprehensive courses that will provide the necessary learning experience to prepare you to become a professional in the career of your choice. The Master of Public Security program is dedicated to training graduates who understand the complexities of public security issues related to modern society's social justice issues.

The eligibility for Public Safety (MPS) in Canada for both domestic and international student is:

To apply for admission to the online MPS degree, applicants must meet the following requirements and submit the outlined paperwork:

  • Have a B average (75%) in their last 5 full credits/10 half credits of a 4-year undergraduate degree
  • Submit all transcripts from all universities or colleges attended
  • Prepare a statement of intent
  • Submit a resume
  • Submit two reference letters

The MPS degree is currently not eligible for Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP). Still, all students can be considered for Laurier’s scholarships, awards, and bursaries, which could provide financial support for this degree's cost.

Other Application Material:

  • The Application Summary is generated after you complete your OUAC application (log back into OUAC to retrieve it).
  • Transcripts and graduation certificates (where applicable) for every postsecondary educational institution (college or university) you have attended, including those not completed a degree or diploma.
  • A completed statement of intent.
  • A résumé of your academic and work experience. If applicable, include a history of your publication and scholarly paper activity and any other information you feel will interest the admissions committee.
  • Completed reference forms. Two references are required, one academic and one professional. A professional reference is someone who can speak to your work and/or volunteer experience related to your selected concentration. Applicants who have been out of school for five or more years and who cannot obtain an academic reference will be required to submit an additional professional reference in its place. Please do not include personal references from friends and family. Note: Reference forms are electronically submitted to Laurier by the referee and do not need to be uploaded.

The tuition fees are based on the whole degree. Wilfred offers generous funding to its graduate students. Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA), Research Assistant, Contract Teaching Faculty (CTF), Internal scholarships and awards, and external funding are also available to support students. Some other funding includes:

  • Winners of major external awards (OGS, QEII, and Tri-Council) may be eligible for top-up funding, including the Dean's Graduate Scholarship (total value exceeds $10,000).
  • Eligible domestic students admitted studying on a full-time basis receive an average of $14,500 a year. This support may be made up of teaching assistantships, internal/external scholarships, and/or faculty-funded studentships or research assistantships.
