Detailed Information of Psychology (MSc) in Canada at Wilfrid Laurier University

Program Overview for Psychology (MSc) in Canada:

Our Master of Science in Psychology (MSc) program is offered in cognitive and behavioral neuroscience. In our course, you will begin the investigation with the teacher advisor in the fall of the first year. Over the course of 16 to 24 months, under the close guidance of your consultant, you will learn how to develop a research plan, use research methods and statistical techniques, present your work at conferences and posters, and use your research as an expert in the field.

You will establish close connections with faculty, staff, and peers through small intensive courses, research lab groups, and regular regional meetings (including seminars and magazine clubs). Students who have a master's degree in psychology specializing in cognitive and behavioral neuroscience generally enter a doctoral program or find employment in an environment that requires research skills.

COGNITIVE AND BEHAVIOURAL NEUROSCIENCES

Neuroscience is one of the most exciting and fastest-growing fields of all life sciences. At Laurier, we use a comprehensive perspective to study the interactions between the behavior, cognition, and nervous systems of different species from fish to humans, populations to individuals and cells, and time scales from milliseconds to generations.

In the course, you will start working and researching with the teacher advisor in the fall of your freshman year. In the course of 16 to 24 months, with the close advice of your consultant, you will learn how to develop a research plan, use research methods and statistical techniques, present your work in lectures and posters, and communicate as an expert. Your research on this matter.

You will build close connections with teachers and peers through small intensive courses, research laboratory groups, and regular regional meetings (including seminars and magazine clubs). Our research interests are interrelated, focusing on underlying mechanisms:

  • Visual and auditory perception;
  • Motor control, attention, and memory;
  • Language;
  • Medical (mental) disorders, including addiction, eating disorders, and age-related memory disorders;
  • The neurobiology of learning and memory, the evolution of learning, social learning, comparative cognition, the learning-motivation interface, and neural plasticity; and
  • Social organization and collective behavior.

The goal of the master's program is to develop abilities in the design, implementation, and evaluation of neuroscience research. The program's purpose is to prepare students for Ph.D. studies or employment in an environment that requires research skills.

Research Focus

Our faculty work in the fields of behavioral and cognitive neuroscience. Specific research foci include:

  • Animal models of human medical/mental disorders including addiction, eating disorders, and age-related memory disorders.
  • The importance of learning processes including the neurobiology of learning and memory, comparative cognition of time and number processing, learning-motivation interface, and neural plasticity.
  • Our Centre for Cognitive Neuroscience researchers spans a broad range of cognitive neuroscience topics, including visual and auditory perception, motor control, attention, memory, and language.

Careers

Our graduates have gone on to work in medical research, policy and planning for various agencies, and both staff and faculty academic positions.

Examples of jobs held by our graduates include:

  • faculty positions at Algoma University and Grant MacEwan University
  • Multi-Health Systems, Toronto
  • federal government research
  • survey research

Facilities

Our facilities allow teachers and students to use a wide variety of tools and techniques, including:

  • Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), high-density evoked potentials (EP), and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS).
  • Animal models of human medical (mental) disorders, including addiction, eating disorders, and age-related memory disorders.
  • Automated tracking of collective behavior and operant behaviors.
  • Confocal imaging, immunohistochemistry, patch-clamp electrophysiology, quantitative gene expression analyses, and in situ hybridization.

In addition, a field station is equipped to study large groups of freely behaving animals to study the neural mechanisms organizing complex social behavior.

The eligibility for Psychology (MSc) in Canada for both domestic and international student is:

Admission Requirements:
