Detailed Information of Biological and Chemical Sciences (PhD) in Canada at Wilfrid Laurier University

Program Overview for Biological and Chemical Sciences (PhD) in Canada:

Our Ph.D. program in Biological and Chemical Sciences is research-focused and operates through a learning model in which you will work closely with the faculty supervisor. Your research will belong to one or more of our three research strengths: environment and health, biological interaction, and structure and reactivity. The research part of the program is supplemented by courses designed to emphasize the importance of interdisciplinary methods for biological and chemical research.

Our plan will make you an independent researcher who can succeed in research, teaching, industry, or government.

This full-time program can be completed in four years. You’ll be required to present and defend a research proposal in conjunction with a qualifying exam, and write and defend a dissertation.

Research Focus

Our program has three core research strengths:

  • Environment and health: research directed at issues affecting the environment that may ultimately impact global health on a broader scale.
  • Biotic interactions: research on the biotic interactions that occur at all levels of biological organization and how such interactions influence biochemical and cellular processes, as well as the fitness and survival of individuals, populations, and ecosystems.
  • Structure and reactivity: research on structural properties of small molecules, polymers, biomolecules, as well as supramolecular assemblies such as protein complexes, nanoparticles, and liquid crystals, and the relation between these structures and their physical, chemical, or biological activities.

Careers

Potential future careers for our graduates include:

  • researcher/instructor in academia
  • university faculty member
  • research scientist in industry or government

The eligibility for Biological and Chemical Sciences (PhD) in Canada for both domestic and international student is:

  • A master's degree in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, or related disciplines minimum A- standing.
  • Applications are reviewed by the graduate program committee, which considers all prior university grades, a statement of research interests, and letters of reference.
  • Exceptional students may obtain early entry to the Ph.D. program from our master's programs in Chemistry and Biochemistry or Integrative Biology.
  • Contact a prospective adviser before submitting your application.

Application Checklist:

After you have submitted your OUAC application, paid the non-refundable application fee, and Laurier has received your application, you'll receive an email from gradadmissions@wlu.ca advising you to upload the additional required documentation to Laurier’s Online Registration & Information System (LORIS).

An application for admission to our Ph.D. program in Biological and Chemical Sciences must include:

  • The Application Summary is generated after you complete your OUAC application (log back into OUAC to retrieve it).
  • Transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate work.
  • A completed statement of intent.
  • A resume of your academic and work experience. Include a history of your publication and scholarly paper activity, and any other information you feel will interest the admissions committee.
  • A sample of your scholarly writing (10-20 pages in length). This may be a chapter of your master's thesis or a paper written for a graduate course.
  • Completed reference forms. Two academic references are required. Note: Reference forms are electronically submitted to Laurier by the referee and do not need to be uploaded.

Proficiency in written and spoken English is essential to graduate studies at Laurier. Applicants whose language of instruction during their previous postsecondary education was not in English must submit evidence of proficiency in English. If applicable, results from accepted testing services must be uploaded to LORIS.

N.B: Most universities have specific international admission requirements based on different education systems.

These are the test eligibilities for the Biological and Chemical Sciences (PhD) to qualify.

The English Language Proficiency (ELP) requirements for Biological and Chemical Sciences (PhD) in Canada: are:

  • TOEFL(ibt): 89
  • IELTS(academic): 7
N.B: ELP is not mandatory for all international students. You could apply without ELP if your previous degree's medium of instruction were in English. Students of Ghana, Nigeria, Liberia, for example, are not required to take the ELP test.
