Program Overview for Applied Politics (MAP) in Canada:

The Master of Applied Politics (MAP) program is a practical graduate program based on political science. Students learn real-world skills such as politics, election, media analysis, survey tool design, and problem-solving in national and international contexts and gain practical experience in internships with community organizations, local politicians, and government agencies.

The Master of Applied Political Science attracts recent graduates who want to gain an edge in their careers in the public or private sector and mature students who have entered the job market and hope to take their careers to a new level.

Our one-year program offers a variety of options to fulfill program requirements. You may choose a coursework-only option, consisting of eight half-credit courses, or you may choose to undertake a Major Research Project in addition to six half-credit courses.

There are four options to complete the Major Research Project:

  • A policy analysis project;
  • A public opinion project; 
  • A journal article option; or 
  • A master’s research paper.

  • Public policy (e.g., social, aboriginal, environmental, (multi)cultural, migration).
  • International political economy and trade.
  • Public opinion, elections, and parties.

  • Area studies (e.g., North America, Africa, Europe, Asia, Latin America).
  • International human rights.

Many of our faculty are associated with research centers, including the Laurier Institute for the Study of Public Opinion and Policy and the world-renowned Balsillie School of International Affairs and Centre for International Governance Innovation.

The eligibility for Applied Politics (MAP) in Canada for both domestic and international student is:

  • A four-year (honors) undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in political science or a related field.
  • A minimum B+ average in your last two years of undergraduate study.
  • Honors graduate from a program other than political science may be admitted if evidence justifying admission is offered and the student has completed a minimum of two courses in political science, one of which must have a social science theory component; research methods are strongly recommended.
  • Applications are reviewed by the graduate program committee, which considers all prior university grades, statements of interest, a writing sample, and letters of reference.

Application Checklist:

After you have submitted your OUAC application, paid the non-refundable application fee, and Laurier has received your application, you'll receive an email from gradadmissions@wlu.ca advising you to upload the additional required documentation to Laurier’s Online Registration & Information System (LORIS).

An application for admission to our Master of Applied Politics program must include:

  • The Application Summary is generated after you complete your OUAC application (log back into OUAC to retrieve it).
  • Transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate work.
  • A completed statement of intent.
  • A resume of your academic and work experience. Include a history of your publication and scholarly paper activity, and any other information you feel will interest the admissions committee.
  • A sample of your scholarly writing (8-10 pages in length or longer), preferably from a third- or fourth-year undergraduate course.
  • Completed reference forms. Two academic references are required. Note: Reference forms are electronically submitted to Laurier by the referee and do not need to be uploaded.

Proficiency in written and spoken English is essential to graduate studies at Laurier. Applicants whose language of instruction during their previous postsecondary education was not in English must submit evidence of proficiency in English. If applicable, results from accepted testing services must be uploaded LORIS.


N.B: Most universities have specific international admission requirements based on different education systems.

The tuition fees are based on the term(Not per academic year). Wilfred offers generous funding to its graduate students. Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA), Research Assistant, Contract Teaching Faculty (CTF), Internal scholarships and awards, and external funding are also available to support students. Some other funding includes:

  • Winners of major external awards (OGS, QEII, and Tri-Council) may be eligible for top-up funding, including the Dean's Graduate Scholarship (total value exceeds $10,000).
  • Eligible domestic students admitted studying on a full-time basis receive an average of $14,500 a year. This support may consist of teaching assistantships, internal/external scholarships, and/or faculty-funded studentships or research assistantships.
