Program Overview for Linguistics, Master's in Canada:

Linguistics is a discipline that explores the structure of language, its role in human activity, and its relationship to the biological and psychological human organism.

It is considered one of the humanities because it focuses on the relationship between human beings and language, but it is also an exact science because of its systematic explanation of the facts of language and its use of experimental methodology.

The Department of Linguistics offers graduate programs leading to the degrees of MA and PhD in linguistics. It is possible, through the selection of relevant courses, to specialize in a variety of areas of linguistic research.

These are the international student eligibility for the Linguistics, Master's in Canada

B in an honours BA in linguistics or the equivalent. Students holding a B.A. with a major in linguistics or in a related field will also be considered. Other Documents:

  • Resume (must include chronological academic history)
  • Letter of Intent (one page): stating your interest and research project
  • Written work required (10-15 pages): A sample of written work which, in your opinion, gives an accurate indication of your academic background
  • A list of the readings which were assigned for each course in linguistics which appears on your transcript(s)
  • Please note that non required admission documents will not be consulted, conserved or returned to the student. These documents will be destroyed according to our administrative procedures.
  • Recommendation Letter (2)

The English Language Proficiency (ELP) requirements for Linguistics, Master's in Canada: are:

  • TOEFL(ibt): 93
  • IELTS(academic): 6.5
N.B: ELP is not mandatory for all international students. You could apply without ELP if your previous degree's medium of instruction were in English. Students of Ghana, Nigeria, Liberia, for example, are not required to take the ELP test.

The differential tuition fee exemption cannot be combined with the Education Bursary for International Master’s Students or the International Doctoral Scholarship.
