Program Overview for Master of Conference Interpreting in Canada:

The School of Translation and Interpreting (STI) offers postgraduate courses, earning a Master of Arts (MA) in Translation Studies, a Master of Conference Interpreting (MCI), and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Translation Studies (Ph.D.). The Master of Conference Interpretation is a career-oriented postgraduate course for graduates specializing in conference interpreting. This is the professional branch of translation that requires intensive training. The program is for full-time students.

The purpose of this program is to train interpreters mainly for the Canadian market. Therefore, all courses will be conducted in English or French. All students should translate from English to French and from French to English, although they may not achieve the same level of proficiency in both directions.

The eligibility for Master of Conference Interpreting in Canada for both domestic and international student is:

  1. hold an honors bachelor's degree;
  2. have an admission average of B (70%) calculated following graduate studies guidelines; and
  3. have completed the STI entrance examination.

Admission Procedure

In addition to completing our online application and paying the application fee to the Ontario Universities Application Centre, students must assemble all relevant documentation and forward the complete application package to the School of Translation and Interpretation director. Applications will not be processed without the application fee and complete file.

Entrance Examination

Applicants will be required to take an entrance examination to test their linguistic skills, aptitude for interpretation, and general knowledge.

The offer of admission is valid for one year. If applicants have not enrolled in the program by the end of this period, they will have to repeat the entrance examination.

Other Documents Required:

  • Resume (must include chronological academic history)
  • Applicants must complete an oral entrance examination, which takes place in a professional setting in Ottawa (usually in May), by invitation of the School of Translation and Interpretation.
  • Please note that non-required admission documents will not be consulted, conserved, or returned to the student. These documents will be destroyed according to our administrative procedures.

N.B: Most universities have specific international admission requirements based on different education systems.

The English Language Proficiency (ELP) requirements for Master of Conference Interpreting in Canada: are:

  • TOEFL(ibt): 100
  • IELTS(academic): 7
N.B: ELP is not mandatory for all international students. You could apply without ELP if your previous degree's medium of instruction were in English. Students of Ghana, Nigeria, Liberia, for example, are not required to take the ELP test.

To be eligible for the differential tuition fee exemption, you must:

  • be admitted to a program of studies offered only in French OR
  • have a secondary or postsecondary diploma in French attesting to a minimum of two years of study, and for programs that offer compulsory courses in both official languages (English and French), enroll for the compulsory courses offered in French

The differential tuition fee exemption cannot be combined with the Education Bursary for International Master’s Students or the International Doctoral Scholarship.
