Program Overview for Master of Arts Classical Studies in Canada:

The Department of Classical and Religious Studies at the Faculty of Arts offers a master's degree program, which can grant a master's degree in classical studies. The plan includes one main area: Late Antiquity (200700 AD). The goal of the program is to prepare students to continue studying in the field of late antiquity, which is an important transition period between antiquity and the Middle Ages.

The department also offers the possibility of learning Coptic, Syriac, and Ethiopian languages ​​(except Latin and Greek). Candidates will receive solid training to enable them to conduct PhD research. The program aims to improve critical and academic skills and expand graduates' knowledge in certain fields.

The ability to conduct detailed research, coherent discussion, write scholarly articles and other learned skills can be applied to careers outside of academia. Some graduates have found federal or local government positions and their master's level training is clearly valued. The department also offers cooperative medieval and Renaissance research projects at the master's level.

  • An honors bachelor’s, or an equivalent degree, in Classics, in Medieval Studies, or in a closely related area, with an overall average of at least 70% (B) and 75% (B+) in the advanced Classical Studies courses.
  • 18 units of classical language courses (12 units in either Greek or Latin and 6 units in the other language) with a minimum average of 75% (B+).

Preference will be given to candidates who have already completed the 18 units. However, candidates with only 12 units will be considered on the condition that the six other units will be completed with a minimum average of 75% (B+) within the first year of the program.
