Program Overview for BA in English in Canada:

Studying English teaches you essential written and oral communication expertise valuable in every field of work and helps you develop critical thinking abilities through textual, ethical, and logical analysis, reading, and interpretation. The study of English broadens your mind, kindles your interest in the world, and connects you to the wealth of great literature created in English, both past and present.

You'll learn essential written and oral communication skills valuable in every field of work as well as critical thinking abilities: textual analysis, logical analysis, reading, and interpretation skills.
 
Dalhousie English graduates are creative, adaptable, culturally aware, and have gone on to do outstanding work in a wide variety of fields. Here are recent examples of careers our alumni have successfully taken:

• publisher or literary editor
• advertising copywriter
• screen writer

Future studies could include programs at the graduate level in English, library and information studies, or a degree in law or education.

You’ll need to meet the general admission requirements as well as the program specific admission requirements before you can apply.

Minimum admission requirements:

1. Completion of secondary school (Grade 12)
2. A minimum overall average of 70% in five academic Grade 12 courses
3. A final grade of at least 70% in Grade 12 academic English and any other required subject (see list below)

Please note: Admission to many programs at Dalhousie is competitive; meeting the minimum average doesn’t guarantee admission. Typically, 70% or higher is necessary in all required subjects for early admission.

If you don’t currently meet these requirements, you may be eligible for one of our upgrading or pathway programs.

International High School Applicant Requirment Based on Curriculum:

1. Advanced Placement (AP)
2. Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations (CAPE)
3. French Baccalauréat
4. GCE A Level (British System)
5. Home-schooled applicants
6. International Baccalaureate (IB)
7. US Curriculum

You'll be assessed based on the equivalency of your home country.
