Program Overview for PhD in Philosophy in Canada:

The Doctoral (PhD) Programis for students who have an MA in philosophy. Requirements may vary according to individual needs, but include several classes, comprehensive exams, and a thesis. We expect all graduate students to participate in undergraduate instruction through Assistantships and/or Instructorships.

All students who are admitted to this program:

  • must show evidence of outstanding ability in philosophy,
  • have applied for external funding such as a SSHRCC or Killam fellowship,
  • have a record of achievement that makes it reasonably likely that they will receive such funding,
  • have satisfactorily completed their MA by the time they begin their doctoral program. 

The eligibility for PhD in Philosophy in Canada for both domestic and international student is:

The great majority (approximately 80%) of our PhD graduates have received tenure-track appointments or continuing appointments, either in academia or in the public sector (e.g. as hospital bioethicists).

Ph.D. Requirements:

  • First-class thesis Master’s degree or its equivalent
  • Minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 (B average) in the last 60 credit hours of study
  • Degree granted by university of recognized standing
  • Most candidates for admission to a doctoral program possess a Master's Degree. Direct entry to some programs is possible for those with exceptional academic standing

Please note:

  • All applicants for regular MA and PhD programmes will automatically be considered for the regular fellowship/teaching assistantship, (Special and Part-Time students are not eligible.)
  • PhD applicants are normally expected to have applied for the SSHRC Pre-Doctoral fellowship, or other external funding, and should state whether they have done so on their statement of interest.

You also need:

  • A one-page statement of your interests
  • A short (10-20 page) sample of your written work.
  • Official transcripts should be emailed directly from any university or college you have attended.
