The Department of Classics has on file a detailed description of the regulations for the Ph.D. degree. All students should obtain a copy from the departmental office.

The Classics Ph.D. degree consists essentially of

  • work in the advanced seminars of the department in the candidate’s main field (the number and extent to be determined by the Supervisory Committee in consultation with the candidate);
  • work in the seminars of the department in the minor field (the number and extent to be determined by the Supervisory Committee in consultation with the candidate); and
  • a substantial and original thesis of value in the judgment of the department.

For PhD you need:

  • First-class thesis Master’s degree or its equivalent
  • Minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 (B average) in the last 60 credit hours of study
  • Degree granted by university of recognized standing
  • Most candidates for admission to a doctoral program possess a Master's Degree. Direct entry to some programs is possible for those with exceptional academic standing
