Detailed Information of PhD in Biomedical Engineering in Canada at Dalhousie University

Program Overview for PhD in Biomedical Engineering in Canada:

The School of Biomedical Engineering (SBME) at Dalhousie University was established in 1999 as a collaborative effort of the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Engineering, and with significant assistance from the Faculty of Dentistry. With a degree in biomedical engineering, you'll enjoy excellent career prospects, research opportunities and training that spans medicine, basic science and engineering. At Dalhousie, you'll use cutting edge tools to address health problems that affect millions of people - while you're still in school.

As biomedical engineers, we take an engineering approach to health research problems. Faculty and students in the department research:

  • synthesis of new tissues, drugs and biomedical materials
  • development of novel biomedical devices
  • mechanical and electrical properties of tissues
  • operation of physiological systems in the body
  • human motion and gait
  • development of new medical imaging systems and techniques

As a graduate student, you'll work closely with engineers and clinicians on projects that address contemporary medical problems. You'll also have the opportunity to work in an environment that fosters medical device commercialization, which helps bring our technology to the patients who need it.

The eligibility for PhD in Biomedical Engineering in Canada for both domestic and international student is:

You may be accepted into the PhD program in Biomedical Engineering from an accredited master's program in the physical sciences, biological sciences or engineering. In such cases, all of the requirements for entry into the MASc program must be satisfied. Additional courses may be required at the discretion of the School and depending on the nature of the research work to be undertaken.

If you are already in the MASc program, you may transfer to a PhD program after you complete five half-classes and a successful PhD Transfer Examination.

Acceptance is conditional upon finding and confirming a supervisor.

You also need:

  1. Official academic transcripts. These are usually sent to us directly from the university. You can also include them with your application letter if they're sealed by the originating university.
  2. Two letters of recommendation from references
  3. An application letter: outlining your past research experience, research interests and/or a research project of the type you wish to pursue. The names of two or more potential thesis supervisors (see Our Faculty for faculty research interests) should be included in your letter. It's helpful to contact potential supervisors via email prior to applying to discuss possible projects and funding availability.

N.B: Most universities have specific international admission requirements based on different education systems.

These are the test eligibilities for the PhD in Biomedical Engineering to qualify.

The English Language Proficiency (ELP) requirements for PhD in Biomedical Engineering in Canada: are:

N.B: ELP is not mandatory for all international students. You could apply without ELP if your previous degree's medium of instruction were in English. Students of Ghana, Nigeria, Liberia, for example, are not required to take the ELP test.

Other test requirements:

  • GRE(computer): Recommended
N.B: Some programs require both international and domestic students to seat for SAT/ACT (for undergraduate) or GRE/GMAT (for graduate and Ph.D. programs). While others require these aptitude tests only for international students. So, verify it with the respective university before applying.
