The two-year MArch program is the final part of the School's professional program. It is preceded by two years of general (non-architecture) studies at any university and two years of architecture in Dalhousie's pre-professional Bachelor of Environmental Design Studies program. The MArch program consists of four academic terms and an eight-month co-op work term. It includes seven courses in architectural design, humanities, technology, and professional practice, plus four electives and a design thesis. The MArch program begins in the summer term, in early May.
Students who have not yet studied architecture should apply to the BEDS program.
MArch admission requires at least four years of university, including architectural studies with a 3.00 grade point average and a B average in design courses. The previous architectural studies must include courses that are equivalent to Dalhousie's BEDS courses.
a) Two official copies of your transcript from each post-secondary institution you have attended:
Please arrange for your previous institution to send the transcripts directly to the School of Architecture: grad.arch@dal.ca. A transcript in a language other than English must be translated into English by the institution. Independent test scores (e.g., SAT, GRE) and high school transcripts are not required. During the pandemic, your previous institution may send your transcript as a PDF. After the pandemic, it will need to be sent again as a printed copy.
b) Digital portfolio of architectural design work:
The portfolio should include advanced architectural design work. Additional design work (drawings, furniture, construction projects, etc.) also may be included. Items should be submitted in a single PDF, max. 20 MB, with your name on the first page. For any collaborative projects, a list of the team members and a description of your role must be included.
c) Statement of intent:
For MArch applicants, this letter to the Admissions Committee should describe the general subject area that you wish to emphasize in the MArch program (e.g., housing, urban design, history/theory, building technology, environmental systems), and your previous experience in this area. The letter also should mention your anticipated thesis topic and eventual career aspirations.
d) Two letters of recommendation
At least one letter should be from an academic instructor.
