Program Overview for PhD in Agricultural Sciences in Canada:

The PhD program in Agricultural Sciences through the Faculty of Agriculture is the first doctoral degree in Agricultural Sciences offered in Atlantic Canada. This thesis-based program will allow students to pursue advanced-level knowledge in agriculture and develop expert skills in their discipline of focus, while producing original, high-quality research that will impact audiences ranging from international scholars to local farmers.

Through the PhD program in Agricultural Sciences, doctoral students will become independent, competent, critical thinkers who will be ready for a wide range of career options in academia, private industry, and government.

Students in the PhD in Agricultural Sciences program will join an intellectually and socially vibrant university community of professors, instructors, dedicated staff, undergraduate students, post-doctoral researchers, and fellow graduate students. Students enrolled in the program will conduct research in one of the following broad areas related to agriculture and food systems:

  • Animal Science
  • Plant Science
  • Soil Science
  • Agricultural Economics
  • Agribusiness
  • Agricultural Technology

  • Environmental sciences

The eligibility for PhD in Agricultural Sciences in Canada for both domestic and international student is:

  • First-class thesis Master’s degree or it's equivalent
  • Minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 (B average) in the last 60 credit hours of study
  • Degree granted by university of recognized standing
  • Most candidates for admission to a doctoral program possess a Master's Degree. Direct entry to some programs is possible for those with exceptional academic standing

A complete graduate studies application to the Faculty of Agriculture must include the following additional documentation for review (incomplete packages will not be reviewed):

  1. An up-to-date Curriculum Vitae (CV) [Required]
  2. A Letter of Research Interest [Required]
  3. Abstract of MSc Thesis [Required]
  4. Abstracts for any additional published research papers [Optional]
  5. Confirmation of Supervision [Required]*

Please note that Confirmed Supervision by a member of the Faculty of Agriculture is REQUIRED to be admitted to our graduate programs.
