Forget what you might see on TV shows like CSI and Bones. Real forensic medicine is much more complicated; it provides you with a solid scientific foundation as the basis for forensic investigations. Forensic science applies scientific knowledge to legal affairs. Forensic scientists strive to provide fair evidence for use in courts to support prosecution or defense in criminal and civil investigations. Saint Mary’s University has the only forensic science program east of Toronto, which you can apply for in the first year of your undergraduate degree.
The Saint Mary’s approach:
Our certification program provides a unique opportunity to learn directly from lecturers who also "work" in forensic science-many of them. Our core courses are taught by working professionals who regularly participate in criminal investigations. These include local experts in fingerprint recognition and blood splatter analysis, as well as the chief medical examiner in Nova Scotia.
Most students obtain a forensic certificate while obtaining a BSc (usually biology or chemistry). You can also combine a forensic certificate with a bachelor's degree in criminology.
Hands-on experience outside the classroom:
Saint Mary's University has established a good partnership with organizations like the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), the Halifax Regional Police Department, and other Canadian law enforcement agencies. Students participate in research on entomology, decay, and decomposition through experiments on decaying animal remains and regularly co-author articles in international journals.
In the forensic laboratory, you will learn how to extract fingerprints from crime scenes, collect DNA samples, analyze blood splatters, and create biometric data from human skeletal remains.
