Program Overview for Bachelor of Science in Chemistry in Canada:

Chemistry is the study of matter, including its properties and composition and the changes it can undergo. The different fields of chemistry include its core areas: analysis, biochemistry, inorganic, organic, physics, and theory. Pairing in the laboratory immediately means that you will meet new people quickly in the first year. Class sizes rarely exceed 25 students, so both teachers and students can get to know you in this friendly and inspiring learning environment.

The Saint Mary’s approach

As a chemistry student, you will receive instruction in each core field and green chemistry and environmental chemistry courses. This will provide you with a solid chemical foundation and the skills and knowledge to solve real-world and contemporary problems. The Canadian Institute of Chemistry nationally recognized our plan. This means that we meet their national education standards and that our Bachelor of Science chemistry students' scores has improved.

Hands-on learning

Our professors have undergraduate research assistants to help with their projects. These paid positions are precious in providing practical learning opportunities. Our students are authors of research papers and often give lectures and travel at local, national, and international conferences.

The program offerings of the Department of Chemistry are designed to meet two main objectives:

1. to provide a rigorous core education in the theory and practice of chemistry for students pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree with Honours, Major, Minor, or Concentration in Chemistry;
2. to provide students in other disciplines with an introduction to the principles and practices of this central science, contributing to their fundamental understanding and appreciation of the physical world.

Our Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Bachelor of Science with Honours in Chemistry are nationally recognized courses by the Board of the Chemical Society of Canada (CSC), ensuring that the courses have the potential to prepare graduates to be competent to practice their professions scientifically. Honorary graduates of this program are ready to continue their education at the postgraduate level in related research fields. Professional graduates also have the ability to continue to receive education or enter the scientific team and contribute to responsibilities in various fields such as research, education, government, and industry. 

In addition to a firm commitment to teaching, the faculty of the Department of Chemistry is also committed to involving undergraduate students in their research activities. Motivated and capable students have the opportunity to enrich their courses by serving as research assistants and participating in research conferences to contribute to research work and disseminate research results.

These are the domestic student eligibility for the Bachelor of Science in Chemistry

Early admission will be given to students who:

• have a final overall grade 11 average of 70%;
• have a minimum grade of 70% in each individual grade 11 course that corresponds to the five grade 12 courses required for admission to their program of choice; and
• are registered for grade 12 courses that satisfy the admission requirements for their program of choice.

Early admission and early scholarships will be awarded to students who:

• have a final overall average of 80% or higher in grade 11;
• have a minimum overall average of 80% in the five program-specific corresponding grade 11 courses with no individual mark less than 70%; and
• are registered for grade 12 courses that satisfy the admission requirements for their program of choice.

IB Diploma:

If you are currently enrolled in the IB Diploma, you can apply to Saint Mary’s with your anticipated or predicted results. For undergraduate admission, we require a minimum IB Diploma score of 24 with grades of 3 and above in pre-requisite subjects.

An IB Diploma score of 28 and above will qualify you for our renewable entrance scholarships. A final score of 30 and above will grant you 30 credit hours toward your degree program which is usually equivalent to one full year of study.

If you are completing Higher Level Diploma courses and achieve final grades of 5, 6, or 7, you will be eligible to receive up to 18 credit hours toward your degree program at Saint Mary’s. The Admissions Office will also add one bonus point to your scholarship average for each of your IB Higher Level classes.
