Program Overview for Master of Applied Health Services Research in Canada:

The MAHSR project is an interdisciplinary graduate program designed to cultivate and improve leadership skills, professional skills, and research capabilities in health services, regardless of whether students have a background in the health care industry, health, or research experience.

It is a unique cooperative project with the Atlantic Regional Training Center. Course materials are provided online by excellent teachers from four Atlantic universities: St. Mary's University, University of Prince Edward Island, University of New Brunswick and Memorial University of Newfoundland.

Students also participated in 5 seminars held with leading decision makers in the health services field, put the theory into practice during the four-month residency period, and conducted original thesis research with the support of a talented teacher To further develop their skills. Graduates of the MAHSR program will receive academic training to pursue exciting careers in the fields of health research, healthcare, and health policy.

The Master of Applied Health Service Research (MAHSR) is a multidisciplinary, research-based, dissertation-oriented degree program organized by the CN Occupational Health and Safety Center, a research center approved by the Senate of Saint Mary's University. The MAHSR program is a collaborative enterprise provided by four universities:

  • Saint Mary’s University
  • University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI)
  • University of New Brunswick (UNB)
  • Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN)

MAHSR is located in the partner Atlantic Regional Training Center (ARTC), which helps coordinate activities among participating universities and promotes research capabilities for applied health services in Atlantic Canada.

The interdisciplinary approach to health service research problems equips students with the skills necessary to solve key health policy, management, and delivery problems. This program is for students who have little or no experience in the health field and no experience conducting research. Since the program is provided through multiple institutional partners, web-based synchronous and asynchronous courses provide a similar learning environment with standardized course content.

Typically, student study time will be held in front of computers using the Brightspace platform (outside the Memorial University of Newfoundland) to access course information, submit assignments, and interact with teachers and other students.

The academic objectives of the Master of Applied Health Services Research are:

  • to provide graduate education at the Master’s level in applied health services research from an interdisciplinary perspective;
  • advance reciprocal arrangements between academic communities and decision-maker organizations which facilitate the use of evidence in policy decisions affecting the health of Atlantic Canadians; and
  • be the platform through which interchanges between decision-makers and health researchers from academic communities generate policy-relevant research.

The learning outcomes of this program include:

  • development of a critical mass of health services researchers who conduct applied health services research throughout Atlantic Canada;
  • proficiency in interdisciplinary methodologies, and
  • an understanding of how to communicate research to decision-makers such that it is used in public policy development.

The Benefits of the MAHSR Program:

  • Web-based courses allow for a flexible graduate education that is both accessible and challenging.
  • Build relationships with award-winning faculty across multiple disciplines, including Atlantic Canada Studies, Psychology, and Management.
  • Engage with key players in the industry, including the Nova Scotia Health Research Foundation, the CN Centre for Occupational Health and Safety, and health services decision-making bodies in Atlantic Canada.
