Program Overview for MFA in Creative Writing in Canada:

The University of Guelph has offered an innovative Master of Fine Arts (MFA) Program in Creative Writing, housed in the University of Guelph-Humber building in Toronto.

The program is structured to nurture and support diverse voices and wide imaginaries. Our distinguished faculty and acclaimed graduates recognize the power of language to summon a different world.

Defining characteristics include the plenary courses that address how writers engage with the world and their craft, the participation of a range of writers from Canada and abroad, individual mentorships, class visits from professionals, and alliances with cultural organizations in the Toronto area.

Requirement for admission to the MFA program is a baccalaureate degree, in an honours program or the equivalent, from a recognized degree-granting institution. There is no requirement as to the discipline in which the degree was earned. Successful applicants will be expected to have achieved an average standing of at least second-class honours (B-) in their last four semesters of study. Note, however, that a limited number of students may be admitted to the MFA without having satisfied the degree requirement and/or academic standing requirement set out above, if they are assessed as qualified to undertake graduate studies in creative writing on the basis of other experience and practice.

Students will be selected for admission to the MFA program primarily on the basis of a portfolio. The portfolio should be between 25 and 40 pages in length and may contain published and/or unpublished work and/or work-in-progress. It must include a minimum of two separate works (or excerpts from separate works). Applicants are encouraged to submit works in more than one genre, e.g., fiction and poetry. Considerations of balance over the program as a whole, with respect to genres in which applicants are particularly interested and particularly strong, will have some impact on admission decisions. Moreover, you need to submit:

• Transcripts
• Recommendation Letter
• Letter of Intent (Statement of Purpose)
• CV/Resume

The international student tuition fees and costs for MFA in Creative Writing in Canada.

**Note that tuition is offset by $2,000 each semester of study for every enrolled MFA student (in the form of the Constance Rooke Scholarship); any other scholarships are added to this.**

All Creative Writing MFA students are granted a $12,000 Constance Rooke Scholarship when they are admitted to the program. No application is required for this award as it is granted to all students who attend the CW MFA program.

This award is allocated over two years of study (the duration of the program is two years and the program does not admit part-time students). This particular award is provided to the student in the following manner — $6,000 in year one of study and $6,000 in year two of study (at the start of every semester, $2,000 is granted to the student: 3 x $2,000 (Fall, Winter, Summer) = $6,000 per year). This semesterly allocation of $2,000 is set against the student's tuition, which obviously reduces the overall cost of the course of study.
