The Facebook Fellowship in USA: Winners of the Fellowship are entitled to receive two years of paid tuition and fees, a $42,000 annual stipend to cover living and conference travel costs, a paid visit to Facebook headquarters for the annual Fellowship Summit, and various opportunities to engage with Facebook researchers.

Facebook Fellowship is a global program designed to encourage and support promising PhD students who are engaged in innovation and related research in computer science and engineering-related fields at accredited universities. 

The program is open to students of any doctoral year. learn. We also encourage people with different backgrounds and experiences to apply, especially those from traditionally underrepresented minority groups. The application will be evaluated based on the strength of the student's research statement, publication record, and letter of recommendation.

4,444 fellows are entitled to two years of tuition and fees paid, an annual stipend of US $ 42,000 to cover living and travel expenses to the conference, paid visits to Facebook headquarters at the annual scholarship summit, and various opportunities to interact with Facebook researchers.

Application Criteria for The Facebook Fellowship in USA


  • Applicants must be full-time PhD students who are enrolled in an accredited university (in any country) by the start of the Fellowship (i.e., Fall 2022)
  • Students must be involved in ongoing research related to one or more relevant disciplines (see available fellowships below)
  • Students must remain enrolled full-time for the duration of the Fellowship to receive program benefits
  • Students should not apply for Facebook Fellowships if they are actively being funded by Facebook through some other sponsorship or collaboration and/or if they are actively being supervised (or co-supervised) by a Facebook researcher.

You also need to include:

  • 500-word research summary that clearly identifies the area of focus, importance to the field, and applicability to Facebook of the anticipated research during the award (reference the available fellowships below)
  • Two letters of recommendation, including one from an academic advisor. You will be asked to provide your references’ contact information, and they will receive a corresponding form to submit their letters.

Are students studying outside the United States eligible to apply? 

Yes. This scholarship is open to students from all universities in the United States and other countries. 

Do I need to be a PhD student to be eligible to apply? 

Yes. You must attend a full-time PhD program to apply for the Facebook scholarship. 

When will the Facebook scholarship start? 

The award funds are awarded during the fall semester of the award year and end at the end of the spring semester. After receiving the tuition invoice for the corresponding fall semester each year, the allowance will be sent. Travel funding must be completed at the end of the school year (usually the spring semester). 

If I currently have funds elsewhere, am I still eligible for a Facebook scholarship? 

If you are selected for this award, you may need to refuse funding from other companies or industry competitors (ie research projects, scholarships, internships, contractor work, employment). Usually, internships from your university, Facebook, or funds related to teaching requirements are allowed. Mandatory military employment or Facebook contractor positions will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. 

Do I need to provide a letter of recommendation when applying? 

You will be asked to provide the names and email addresses of your two arbitrators. They will receive an email instructing them to upload a letter of recommendation. If your application is a finalist, we may contact your recommender to confirm it. 

When is the application deadline? 

All application materials must be submitted by the application deadline. Your recommenders will have more time to send their letters of recommendation. 

Can I apply if I only have one year of study time left? 

Yes, you can still apply. You will only receive tuition and allowances while you are in school. 

Do both letters of recommendation need to be from a teacher? 

One letter should be from your PhD supervisor and another letter can be from another professor or industry contact. 

Where will the scholarship be sent to? School or me? 

Tuition will be paid directly to the school, and the stipend will be sent directly to the researcher, unless otherwise stated. Allowances are taxed in accordance with local laws. Starting in 2020, winners, tuition and travel allowances/funds cannot be paid to the university together. 

Does the 500 word limit of the research abstract include references to the mentioned articles or can the references be placed on an additional page? 

References can be included in your CV / CV as a single uploaded file. 

I am a Facebook AI resident student, am I eligible for a Facebook scholarship? 

No, Facebook AI resident students are not eligible for Facebook scholarships. 

Will my scholarship award be taxed? 

Yes. The award of your allowance is taxable and based on local tax laws (you are a resident). Once you accept the award, you will be required to submit the necessary tax information. Your tuition fees will be sent directly to your university and are not considered as personal income. Starting with the 2020 winners, the $5,000 travel award will be combined with the $37,000 allowance (taxable). The total allowance is US$42,000. 

If I am currently supervised (or jointly supervised) by Facebook researchers, am I eligible? 

Students should not apply for Facebook scholarships if they are actively funded by Facebook through some other sponsorship or cooperation and / or if they are actively supervised (or jointly supervised) by Facebook researchers. If you have any questions, please email Academicrelations@fb.com. 

What if my university has a fixed income requirement for all PhD researchers? 

If your institution has a fixed income requirement, all doctoral researchers must receive the same payment, and we will directly provide the school with the required tuition and Facebook allowance.
