Swedish Institute Scholarships for South Africa in Sweden: Provides full tuition fees, living expenses of SEK 10,000/month, and a travel grant of SEK 15,000

The Swedish Institute Scholarships for Global Professionals in Sweden aims to develop future global leaders that will contribute to the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and contribute to a positive and sustainable development in their home countries and region.

The program, Swedish Institute Scholarships for Global Professionals in Sweden, is funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It offers you a unique opportunity to develop both professionally and academically, experience Swedish society and culture, and build a long-lasting relationship with Sweden and other scholarship holders. Usually, 4-6% of the applicants are awarded a Global Professionals scholarship.

Application Criteria for Swedish Institute Scholarships for South Africa 


The Swedish Institute Scholarships for South Africa in Sweden program is part of the Swedish government’s international awards scheme aimed at developing global leaders who will contribute to the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It is funded by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Sweden and administered by the Swedish Institute (SI). 

The program offers a unique opportunity for future leaders to develop professionally and academically, to experience Swedish society and culture, and to build a long-lasting relationship with Sweden and with each other. SISSA is a special initiative in connection with the Binational Commission agreement between Sweden and South Africa.

The requirements for Swedish Institute Scholarships for South Africa (SISSA) in Sweden are: 

  • Only citizens of South Africa are eligible for SISSA.
  • You must be liable to pay tuition fees to Swedish universities, followed the steps of University Admissions, and be admitted to one of the eligible master’s programs.
  • The master's studies must be eligible for SI scholarships. We give the greatest priority to certain subject areas.
  • There are also conditions regarding dual citizenships, previous residence and studies in Sweden, and more

Priority will be given to those applicants who:

  1. have completed bachelors with honors or equivalent from a South African university,
  2. have demonstrated work and leadership experience, and
  3. choosing study programs with an emphasis on one of the following subject areas:
    • Computer science and IT
    • Design (industrial design, architecture, urban/regional planning)
    • Engineering
    • Environmental technology/Sustainable development
    • Gender studies
    • Nanotechnology
    • Public health

A complete application consists of:

  • Motivation letter
  • CV (the CV should not exceed three pages)
  • Letters of reference (One letter of reference based on work experience is mandatory. Two different letters of reference are mandatory as part of the application.)
  • Valid and completed proof of work and leadership experience
  • Copy of your valid passport
