The Jóvenes en Acción (Youth in Action) Program provides high school students from Mexico the opportunity to spend one month in the United States to build leadership, communication, English language, and community engagement skills. Participants engage in workshops, community service activities, meetings with community leaders, and site visits.

The program includes a homestay. Participants return home mobilized to implement service projects in their home communities. This program is a joint initiative between the U.S. Department of State, the Mexican government, and the private sector.

Application Criteria for Jóvenes en Acción (Youth In Action)


Public applications are accepted.

  • Be in their first or second year of high school (preparatoria)
  • Either come from a public high school or attend a private school on scholarship.

Prospective participants must form teams of 4-5 members and present a project that they want to implement in their community to address a problem such as bullying, substance abuse, or school dropouts. A committee comprised of representatives from U.S. Embassy Mexico City, the Mexican Public Education Ministry, the private sector and program alumni meet to select the best teams.
